How Artist Centric are music streaming platforms?
"Spotify leads in overall feature breadth, but still has room to improve in areas like transparency. The Spotify For Artists toolkit takes our #1 spot, largely thanks to unmatched profile customization options, a wide range of advertising and marketing features, and rich consumption analytics. However, the platform recently removed several years of older streaming data, limiting artists' visibility into long-term listening trends.
YouTube and SoundCloud enable the most direct fan connections. YouTube's comment sections and SoundCloud's ability for artists to directly message fans make these platforms stronger for audience engagement, compared to larger competitors like Spotify and Apple Music. However, YouTube Music separates artists' standard YouTube profiles from their music pages, fragmenting data.
Apple Music and Amazon Music lag in marketing capabilities. While these platforms score relatively high on analytics insights, they offer almost no self-serve advertising or on-platform fan marketing options for artists.
Data access remains uneven. Major labels enjoy access to far more granular analytics across all major streaming platforms, although third-party analytics services like Chartmetric are helping to level the playing field for independents.
Commerce and ticket sales integration is still early. Most streaming platforms still have a long way to go in providing turnkey e-commerce tools for artists; Spotify leads here again, through their self-service integrations with platforms like Shopify.“
Struggling to connect with fans? Here’s the solution!
From The Connected Artist#36 in the Secret Sessions Newsletter by Harriet J.W.
“Why would you decide to attend a gig? Because you liked a Canva graphic you saw on Instagram?
Why would you decide to buy a piece of merch? Because the artist sent out an email with the subject line: $ NEW MERCH FOR SALE $
I’m guessing it’s more than likely that you connected with the artist, their music and their story.
Learning how to tell your story in a way that is short, succinct and has emotion is key to building your fanbase.
Let’s start with my story:
When I was 16 I was hit by a car, this ended my plan of a sports career. I picked up a camera and started a YouTube channel. I learnt how to build large audiences centred around creativity I now identified as a creative and in my head, creatives didn't make money. I didn't know how I could turn my large channel and live event into a profitable business. I was getting recognition for everything that I created but I wasn't making the income I needed to survive. I ended up being a semi-finalist in a business competition with Richard Branson and had to put a proper business model around my creativity. I loved the buzz of building a brand and trying to sell it to people. I met an investor who saw something in me and taught me how to sell. I learned how to help creatives make money, I launched multiple digital products and never looked back. There are many different versions of how to format this, we are going to use one by Justin Welsh who is an online Creator.

Creating Your Backstory
What was the problem?
All great stories start with a problem someone is looking to overcome. Maybe you were told you would never make it or maybe your parents thought music was a terrible career choice?
What was your internal struggle?
How did the problem above make YOU feel
What was the external struggle?
How did the problem above make YOU feel
What was your change event?
What happened in your life that turned things around? Maybe you played a show or won a competition.
What was the spark?
What was the change in YOU that the event sparked
Who was your guide?
Which other human being was a key player in your story. Who believed in you? Who showed you the way?
What was the result?
Where are you now? What is the positive transformation?
I get it, this seems like a lot of work but once your backstory is crafted you can use it over and over again in your content, on the stage and when meeting new people. It’s worth the time investment.”
