You don’t (just) need more fans. It’s all about intent.

From Where Music’s Going Newsletter by Rob Abelow

You need people who care.

How do you measure who cares?

With intent:

Most of the ways people interact with music is low-intent.

  • In the background

  • Selected for them

  • Costs nothing

And most strategies are to increase the volume of these interactions.

Going after low-intent people in low-intent places, hoping they funnel down to something more valuable.

But that’s a hard journey:

  1. You need to play the reach game

  2. You need to find out who they are

  3. You need to convert them into fans

Because your monthly listeners don’t care.

They’re not your fans.

You need people who care.

You need high-intent fans with high-intent actions.

High-intent doesn’t necessarily require money. Time, effort, and energy all matter.

  • Buying

  • Joining

  • Interacting

Anything that shows they care.

Because caring is sticky.

When you give people high-intent ways to interact, they’re more likely to stick to you long-term, and attract more high-intent people.

Fans have new ways to show intent.

They’re more interactive.

Community.
Co-creation.
Participation.
Social listening.

Lean into these wherever you can.

It may feel small - like it’s one by one - but each relationship has far more value.

You want out of the hits game.

Where nothing is repeatable & you’re starting over every time.

→ Radio was the old hits game.
→ Playlisting was the next.
→ TikTok is the newest.

This doesn’t mean you don’t need discovery, it means you need people who stick around regardless if the next single or TikTok goes viral.

Without intent, you’ll always be playing the hits game.

You need fans.
You need connections.
You need people that actually care.

That’s repeatable.

Your weekly dose of motivation

How To Re-Align Your Values

From Secret Sessions Newsletter by Harriet JW, THE CONNECTED ARTIST #32

”Step 1: Put your phone away, turn off your notifications and sit with a paper and a pen, think of 5 values that truly define why you do what you do (Depth, Impact, Gratitude and Connection are examples of my values from above)

Step 2: Define the tribe you want to build. Who is that fanbase and what are their shared values. What is the change they want to see in the world?

Step 3: Look at the way you currently operate? Where do you spend your time and who are you showing up for? Evaluate the things in your life that do not serve you or our tribe.

Step 4: Write your manifesto. Try using the prompts ''I choose X over Y'' X being the things you want to embrace and Y being the things you want to get rid of.

Shooting Star🌠

Meet Jimmy, from Ohio. He’s been playing music since 2007 as a solo folk punk artist. He released his first music NFT in early January of 2022. Shortly after, he started releasing more and more. As demand for his music raised, he started Sick City as a project on Cardano. His goal is to provide resources to artists for free to teach them how to maximize their IP potential using web3.

His initial major project, "Epoch Genesis," started on March 30, 2022, featuring regular token releases with music from artists worldwide, all distributed freely to the community. He later launched the Sick City Record Shop as an NFT store on Discord, offering a wide range of content within single NFTs on the Cardano blockchain.

Collaborating with the music community, they created CIP-60, Cardano's music metadata standards, improving the music listening experience. Now, Sick City has partnered with NMKR and NEWM to create The Record Store, Cardano's first music-exclusive NFT marketplace. Buyers can use ADA, ETH, SOL, and major credit cards for purchases. Exciting developments for musicians and listeners on Cardano are underway. Cardano's versatility, support, and dynamic collectibles make it a compelling platform for musicians entering the web3 space. It's worth exploring.
