Ampy Unlocks the Music Social Graph and Onboards 500M Spotify Users to Web3

Ampy is a project aiming to bridge the gap between the music industry and crypto, with a focus on giving artists more control and ownership over their fanbase, through their music social graph. Ampy is introducing a groundbreaking initiative called the "Web2 vampire attack" on Spotify, aimed at restoring ownership to artists. Users can link their Spotify accounts to Ampy, which will automatically export their listening history. Ampy's algorithm will then analyze this data and generate a dynamic NFT called a Web3 passport. This passport continually ranks users in real-time based on their interactions with the artist and their scores relative to other users, such as "Top 10% Fan" or "Top 1% Fan."

Streaming’s New Model?

From Where Music’s Going by Rob Abelow

UMG & Deezer launched a new streaming model. It’s a test of their ‘artist-centric’ vision. Starting in France with UMG artists.

The goal? Reduce payouts for ‘noise’ & support ‘real’ artists.

Here’s how it works:

1. PRO ARTIST DOUBLE BOOST: 2x payouts for artists with 1,000+ monthly streams from 500 unique listeners

2. ACTIVE LISTENING DOUBLE BOOST: Songs that fans actively choose will get an additional boost.

3. GOODBYE RAIN SOUNDS: Replace non-artist noise content with Deezer's functional music, which will not be included in royalty pool. UMG x Endel’s artist-led functional music wins.

4. REDUCE MUSIC OVERFLOW: Stricter rules for providers. Deezer has seen 110m new songs in the last 2 years. No specifics on provider rules, but the open-to-all, all-you-can-release for $10/year distribution has been exploited.

Search for a Beatles song, play it, they get a 4x royalty multiplier.

The Good: We must reward active listening & reduce clutter, particularly as AI adds to the problem.

The Less Good: It’s hard for middle-class artists to break thru financially, partly bc of cannibalization. And yes, that includes hobbyists. But “pro” is tenuous & this is not aimed at helping music’s mid tiers.

What does “professional artist” mean?
1,000 monthly streams sounds low. But this is on Deezer only. Spotify has 58x more subscribers.

Deezer: 9.5m
Spotify: 551m

If UMG’s vision expanded 1:1 to Spotify, artists would need 58k monthly streams from 24k listeners to qualify.

Under 1% of Spotify artists averaged that in 2022 (~57k).

Those are our emerging artists building on the way up. These fractions of pennies have far more value for them - financially & psychologically - than Taylor Swift.

AI in Music🎶

From Music Ally, a Newsletter About the Music Industry

There are new moves afoot this week on both sides of the Atlantic to avoid some of the negative impacts that creative AI technologies might have on musicians:

  • In the US, a revised version of the Protect Working Musicians Act was introduced. The original version focused on codifying a right for “working artists and independent musicians to band together to negotiate with dominant streaming platforms”. Representative Deborah Ross, working with the Artists Rights Alliance and A2IM, has expanded the details to include AI.

  • The bill would also make it clear that “antitrust laws are no obstacle to these negotiations”, and would enshrine the right of these musicians to “collectively refuse to license their music to a dominant online music distribution platform that refuses to pay market value rates”.

  • In the UK, the Council of Music Makers (the umbrella body for The Ivors Academy, the Featured Artists Coalition, the Musicians’ Union, the Music Producers Guild and the Music Managers Forum) has published ‘five fundamentals for music AI’. The principles boil down to consent, respect and remuneration. More specifically, that means individual artists, songwriters and producers consenting to any use of their work to train AI models, rather than having that consent “inferred by rights-holders or technology companies”.

  • Among other things, The Council also wants musicians to “share fairly in the financial rewards of music AI”; to have a say in how the licensing models and revenue sharing from AI music evolve; and other key requests – read our full analysis here.

Labels body the BPI issued a statement by its CEO, Dr Jo Twist, in response to the Council’s announcement. “Safeguarding human artistry and the interests of creators is front and centre in all of this, and the BPI and its members look forward to maintaining open discussions with our colleagues across the music sector as we navigate the dynamic landscape of AI opportunities.” Twist said.
We think that putting words into action now will be the best path forward to negotiate the challenges (and take advantage of the opportunities) in AI – not just in the UK, but across the global music industry.

Shooting Star🌠

Meet Dr. Fries, the creator of a very interesting virtual instrument!

His formal studies are in music education, film scoring, programming and digital art. One day, he was doomscrolling Instagram and a video came up demonstrating the classical Indian way of singing musical scales. He‘s always been a HUGE fan of Carnatic music, so that video opened up his appetite to create something unseen before - The Sarangi Synth (Sarangi means 100 colours or all-colourful in Gujarati)! This virtual instrument allows you to create your own sounds and, most importantly, is always available and works on pretty much any device, from a phone to a computer with a QWERTY keyboard or a MIDI instrument

What’s great is that it is FREE to use and V2.0 is on its way with even more cool features! Check it out here.
